Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla were electronic geniuses. They
both contributed to mankind in an astonishing way. Thomas Edison’s life and
discovery are very unique. Nikola tesla also had a unique life. Thomas and
Nikola had similarities to each other as well as differences, and these
similarities shaped our knowledge to electricity today.
Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847- October 18, 1931 in Milan
Ohio. Thomas grew up in Port Huron, Michigan. He was the 7th and last
child born to Samuel Ogden Edison Jr. (1804-1896). Thomas Edison during his
early life discovered hearing problems, instead of going to a public school like
a normal child; his only education in his life was from his mom and a book.
Later on he discovered many new technologies for his time such as the telegraph,
light bulb, carbon telephone transmitter, electric light, and etc. He started
putting a name out for himself and started a business in Newark, NJ with William
Unger; than he started another company called Pope, Edison and company. He
started Pope, Edison and company with Franklin L. Pope and James Ashley, and
they all advertised themselves as electrical engineers. Another person Edison
associated with was his wife Mary Stillwell, association by
marriage.
Another great inventor was Nikola Tesla, you have probably heard of Tesla
Motors; well this is where it all began. Nikola Tesla was born on July 10 1856
and died on January 1942. He is originated from Serbia. Tesla was the fourth of
the five children; he had an older brother named Dave and three sisters. Dave
was killed in a horse riding accident when Nikola was young. Later on Tesla
started to study German, Arithmetic, and religion. He learned all this in his
primary school in Simian, and then the Austrian Polytechnic School. He was very
bright and surpassed everyone academically. He passed all 9 exams when the most
ever passed was 4. Later on when he moved France and worked for continental
Edison company which was located in France, then he got on an immigration ship
and moved to the U.S. Unfortunately mutiny broke out on the ship and he lost all
his clothes and money, he arrived to the U.S with only four cents. He then
started working for Edison Machine work. When he got to Edison he was making 18
dollars a month and he said he could improve his motor for vehicles, and Edison
said he would give him 50 thousand dollars if he did. Tesla did it and Edison
made up an excuse and said that was American humor, and that he would just give
him a 10 dollar a month raise, Tesla quit and started his own company. He then
discovered three phase electric power, induction motors, wireless telegraphy,
alternating currents, neon lamps, remote control, and Tesla coil. After his
meeting with Edison, he associated with attorney Charles F. Peck and business
partner Alfred S. Brown.
